Report No. 9 – That Morning Aroma
Mmmm. The smell of breakfast in the morning is one of those wonderfully simple, yet rich experiences I love. The coffee smell alone is enough to get me out of bed. Add to that eggs, bacon, homemade biscuits, and heck, even toast and I’m pretty much up and ready to chow down. I LOVE breakfast. It’s my favorite meal.
However, I prefer breakfast somewhere between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. But lately, I’ve been awakened at 3 a.m. by the smell of toast wafting into our bedroom. The first time I thought it was my wife, because she wasn’t in bed. I went out to the kitchen to see what was up. There she stood with a piece of buttered toast in her hand.
“You hungry?” I asked.
“No, mister smarty pants.” she replied. “I woke up smelling toast, so I came in here to see who was making it.”
“Well, it wasn’t me.” I frowned.
“Obviously,” she said.
Who’d gotten the butter out on the counter?
We were stumped. No one else was home that night. We pondered later that day if it could actually be our little fairy. Could she actually open our pantry door, get into the bread and make toast all by herself? What about getting the heavy refrigerator door open?
Well after some investigation, and a bit of handy dandy photo trappery, I can say, “Yes, our Lilly fairy can do all of that and more.”
She has made herself right at home in our kitchen, making toast with butter and lately, she’s discovered the jams and jellies. Of course, all of this nocturnal cooking activity has resulted in much-needed cleanup in kitchen. But, we now are finding her antics fairly amusing. “Fairly” amusing–I know, bad pun, but I couldn’t resist.
I wonder if I can lure her into making coffee?
